“Playground to Playground” Bike Ride Along Bolin Creek: The Power of Greenways to Connect Communities

Yesterday, NEXT Chapel Hill–Carrboro, a local advocacy organization supporting diverse housing options and accessible transportation, hosted a “Playground to Playground” bike ride along Bolin Creek Road. The event brought together families, cyclists, and community members to celebrate safe, inclusive public spaces.

While I have limited experience with group rides, the event was smoothly organized with the support of Alyson West, a leader of the Carrboro Linear Parks Project, whose experience helped ensure a well-coordinated and welcoming ride. Families rode together along the Chapel Hill section of the Bolin Creek Greenway, enjoying a shared outdoor experience.

The Bolin Creek Greenway is one of Chapel Hill’s most cherished spaces. It’s a place where people walk, bike, skate, use wheelchairs, or simply sit on a bench while others pass by. It’s one of the few places where the city’s diversity is truly visible. During the ride, participants shared personal memories connected to the greenway—teaching children how to ride bikes or skate, stopping for a treat at Caffe Driade, or visiting Foster’s, now known as Root Cellar.

These reflections highlight why the greenway plays such an important role in making Chapel Hill feel welcoming and connected. Beyond recreation, green spaces serve as vital community hubs that strengthen social ties.

Looking ahead, the extension of the Bolin Creek Greenway into Carrboro is especially exciting. This connection would allow children to travel safely to school, enable families and residents to access the Carolina North Forest without a car, and foster stronger links between the two towns.

Discussions about land use and planning policy can often feel abstract. Events like Sunday’s bike ride bring those conversations back to their core purpose. They remind us that thoughtful planning and investment in greenways help create healthier, more connected, and more livable communities.
